Is it safe to leave my gas fireplace on overnight if I sleep next to it?

Our furnace is broken and won't be fixed for a day or two. Is it safe to let my direct-vent gas fireplace run overnight if I sleep next to it? What are the odds that a fire starts? I'll have a fire extinguisher next to my chair. Thanks for the answers!
