What do volcanologists use to measure eruptions?

They use several tools to measure eruptions. One is a seismometer. It allows them to track mini quakes caused by the magma changing direction. They also us samples of hardened magma which they collected from the caldera to determine the life history of the magma. Different processes will leave a unique chemical signature. They have started using GPS to study how the mountain moves and the magma chamber fills.
